Pind Daan in Haridwar

In Pind Daan, the Hindu religious homage for the souls of the departed and spirits of ancestors, pind is the symbolic offering in the ritual. Pind is a ball of rice or wheat flour mixed with dried milk, honey, and sesame seeds. The Hindu priests officiating the ritual offer seven pinds or balls. One of these seven balls is specifically offered for the soul of the deceased family member. The Hindu ritual for the deceased and ancestors has been handed down through countess generations and has become one of the most important Hindu religious rituals. The homage to the soul of the dearly departed helps it to attain freedom from the cycle of life and rebirth or mukti. Of higher significance is Pind Daan performed during the fortnight of Ashwin.

In the Hindu religion, Haridwar is considered as one of the seven holiest places. The name means “Gateway to God.” It is the first stop in the Hindu religious pilgrimage which every Hindu is expected to make at least once in his or her lifetime. The most famous of India’s holy rivers, the holy river Ganga or Ganges River, starts to flow from Haridwar. The river is a favorite among Hindu devotees for taking a dip in the waters or bathing in it, in accordance to Hindu belief that doing so cleanses away worldly sins to achieve salvation or moksha. The Ganges River and its banks are well-known for the performance of the Hindu rituals for the dearly departed. One such ritual is the Pind Daan.
